Carat
A diamond’s carat is a description of its overall weight. This metric is used for both natural and lab-grown diamonds. Contrary to popular belief, the carat is not descriptive of the overall size of the diamond. This is instead measured in millimetres. The heavier the diamond, the higher the carat and therefore, the higher the cost. It is important to note that just because the carat is impressive, it doesn’t mean that the other Cs are up to scratch.
Colour
A diamond’s colour is the result of chemical impurities within the stone. The most commonly displayed tones being brown or yellow. The less colour a diamond exhibits, the rarer and therefore valuable it will be. The colour of a lab-grown diamond is determined based on the Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) criteria. As with natural diamonds, the colour of a lab-grown diamond is subtle in nature and will vary from diamond to diamond. This can range on an alphabetical scale from D to Z. The former being virtually colourless and more valuable. However, the latter being noticeably yellow in colours and therefore, less valuable. Clarity
Diamond Clarity generally refers to how free a diamond is from inclusions and blemishes. These blemishes can stop light passing through the diamond. In naturally mined diamonds, these blemishes result from minerals or fractures during a diamond’s formation deep in the earth. The main difference is that the inclusions in lab-grown diamonds tend to be a bit darker in colour due to their synthetic manufacturing process. As a result, we advise going higher on the clarity grade for lab diamonds.
Cut
Perhaps the most important aspect of a diamond is the diamond’s cut. This will influence how bright it looks, especially when seen in the light.
